Matter vs. TrainingPeaks

TrainingPeaks spent twenty years becoming the standard for endurance analysis, and it earned that. It is also, as of July 2026, owned by a device manufacturer. If you coach a roster rather than a handful of athletes, those are two different reasons to look around.

We are not going to tell you TrainingPeaks is bad software. It isn’t. This page is about where the two products actually differ.

One: independence stopped being theoretical

On 22 July 2026, Garmin acquired TrainingPeaks and TrainHeroic. TrainingPeaks has said it will keep operating as a cross-platform ecosystem, and there is no reason yet to doubt that. But coaches in this sport have watched Today’s Plan and RGT get acquired and then switched off, and they watched third-party licensing narrow after Garmin bought Firstbeat.

Matter is not owned by anyone who sells watches. Nothing here quietly steers your athletes toward hardware.

Two: TrainingPeaks is built around one athlete

Its whole design assumes a coach opening one athlete’s calendar and reading it carefully. That is the right shape for a coach with eight athletes, and the wrong shape at forty — the reading does not compress, so mornings do.

Matter is built the other way round: the roster is the home screen, and the product spends the night deciding which six athletes you actually need to look at.

When you should stay on TrainingPeaks

If you coach a small number of endurance athletes, live inside WKO’s modelling, sell plans through the marketplace, or your athletes are all on Garmin anyway — staying put is the sensible call, and the acquisition may well make that integration tighter. Matter is the better answer when the roster is big enough that reading every athlete stops being possible, when the data you care about includes the weight room, or when being independent of a hardware company matters to you.
